Governor Brown’s issued his budget proposal calling for eliminating the state deficit and increasing spending by $6.3 billion over the prior fiscal year. The state budget deficit was $25 billion when Brown took office. Brown is proposing a 7 percent increase over the current fiscal year for a total general fund budget of $97.6 billion, with a planned surplus of $850 million. Additional revenue from an improving economy and the higher taxes approved by voters will be the key to the increase in spending.
