eNotarization Update

The National Notary Association recently released What Business Needs to Know About eNotarization that outlines various on-going eNotarization initiatives.  These initiatives include eSignature, eNotarization, Webcam Notarization and Knowledge Based Authentication (KBA).  NNA views eNotarization as a solution for creating efficiencies, cutting costs, eliminating errors, and reducing risk.  According to NNA, while certain challenges remain, societal acceptance of eNotarization has never been higher or more accessible.  However, the Webcam portion of eNotarization remains in its infancy, since currently only Virginia and Montana permit Webcam Notarization.  Webcam Notarization serves as an alternative to a personal appearance before a notary, and may gain traction when combined with Knowledge Based Authentication where an identity is verified based on questions developed from personal and credit history.  The NNA is developing a Model eNotarization Act that will include a section on Webcam Notarization.  The CLTA closely monitors notary legislation in California to make sure consumer protections are maintained.
