Legislation Proposes Limits on Tax Defaulted Property Sales to Existing Owner

Senate Bill 812 (Senate Committee on Governance and Finance) would prohibit the current owner of tax-defaulted property subject to a tax sale from purchasing that property below the minimum price set to cover all the outstanding taxes and costs. Under existing law, if the minimum bid set for tax-defaulted property does not attract a buyer, the tax collector may offer the property for sale at a set minimum price less than the original minimum required to cover the outstanding taxes.
