On Thursday, California Senate Pro Tem Kevin de Leon suggested that Senator Tony Mendoza, a Democrat from Artesia and de Leon’s former roommate, take a leave of absence until the completion of an investigation based on allegations that he harassed former aides. The request follows a November vote by the Senate Rules Committee to remove Senator Mendoza as the Chair of the Senate Banking and Financial Institutions Committee pending the results of an investigation into the allegations about his behavior.

In response, a lawyer for Senator Mendoza announced Friday that the senator was refusing to comply with the request to step down. Mendoza himself said in a statement that he was “disappointed” that he was being asked to resign without being given “an opportunity to defend myself”.

Mendoza’s conduct will be looked into by two law firms that the Senate has retained to handle investigations into allegations of improper behavior.
