In January of 1993 Bill Clinton was sworn in as President of the United States, and later that year the North American Free Trade Agreement was approved. In July of 1993 the 30-year fixed rate mortgage rate averaged 7.21% and the unemployment rate was 6.9%.

Henri Van Hirtum of United Title Company was elected President of the CLTA at the convention held at Silverado Resort in Napa, assuming his office as leader of a trade association that represented 15 admitted title insurers and 115 underwritten title companies. CLTA currently represents 16 title insurers and 55 underwritten title companies.

Getting bigger headlines than the CLTA convention, the Maastricht Treaty that formally established the European Union also took effect that same year.
