Millions Collected from Child Support Liens in California

The California Department of Child Care Services reports that child support collected due to lien collections exceeded $18 million for the 2017-18 fiscal year. This was an increase from the prior fiscal year when collections exceeded $16 million. For years the CLTA has worked closely with the State to make sure that the lien system is efficient, while still respecting the county–based recording system in California.

Lien collections are under one percent of total collections because, although large in dollar amounts, the lien collection totals are outstripped by collections through wage actions. Wage collections ended up constituting over 67% of the total collections. The IRS and Franchise Tax Board also end up collecting child support. Collections from all sources totaled over $2 billion.
