Democrats Hoping for a Super-Majority in State Senate

Democrats had a super-majority in the State Senate earlier this year before a recall election cost Senator Josh Newman his Senate seat. A super-majority is important because tax bills need a 2/3 vote to pass. Now, with an open Senate seat in the 12th District due to term limits, and a Democratic campaign drive to defeat Senate Republican leader Patricia Bates of Laguna Niguel, Senate Democrats are hoping that they can regain the 2/3 advantage that their Assembly colleagues already enjoy. Because of tight Congressional races in overlapping State Senate districts, the Democrats are hoping that a strong Democrat turnout for California congressional races will help their party in the targeted State Senate races.
