Although votes remain to be counted, it appears that California’s new Insurance Commissioner is Ricardo Lara, currently a Democratic State Senator from Southeast Los Angeles. Senator Lara has a lead of 51.5% of the votes over former Republican Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner who ran without a party designation in this election. Senator Lara’s campaign focused on healthcare, civil rights and economic security.

As a state legislator Senator Lara co-introduced single payer healthcare for Californians, was a key leader in the effort to grant driver’s licenses to undocumented immigrants and a strong supporter of providing healthcare to immigrant children. Senator Lara was elected Chair of the Legislative Latino Caucus in his first term and serves as the Vice-Chair of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus.

Before first being elected to the Assembly in 2010 Senator Lara worked as a staffer for former Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez and for now State Senate Pro Tem Kevin de León.
