Privacy Coalition Wants Stronger Law

A coalition of consumer groups has sent a letter to California’s legislators urging them to add a broadened consumer enforcement remedy to the new California Consumer Privacy Act. The coalition also urged strengthening the resources of the Attorney General and addressing the AG’s “burdensome obligation to provide private opinions to private businesses at taxpayers’ expense and a get out of jail free card (“right to cure”) for companies that could render months of investigation and other efforts meaningless.”

The groups ask that the Legislature focus on building upon the law by addressing companies’ internal misuse of data and adding security provisions for all personal information, not just certain types of data such as financial information and social security numbers. The letter takes clear aim at business groups seeking to amend the law, claiming that some in the industry seem intent on pushing California backward.
