Commercial Tenant Eviction Moratorium Bill Held in Senate Appropriations Committee

Senate Bill 939 (Wiener), which would have had serious detrimental impacts for California’s economy and was opposed by a broad coalition of industry groups including CLTA, has been held in the Senate Appropriations Committee. As a result, the bill will miss a key legislative deadline and is now dead.

The bill was widely criticized by opponents for broadly applying a rent deferral mandate to virtually all commercial property leases within California for an unknown and/or extended period of time, seen as likely to force many commercial property owners into default and create long-term economic damage within the state.

CLTA continues to track and oppose two other unreasonable tenant and borrower relief bills moving through the Legislature in coordination with broad coalitions of industry groups, AB 828 (Ting) and SB 1079 (Skinner).
